Efficacy comparison of Effipro® Duo, fipronil alone and pyriproxifen alone against the further development of flea (Ctenocephalides felis) eggs collected from cats
The objectives of the study were to identify any possible interactions between fipronil and pyriproxifen, the two active ingredients of Effipro® Duo spot-on formulation (Virbac, Carros, France) and their impact on the efficacy against the further development of flea eggs. Twenty-eight healthy cats were randomly allocated to one of four treatment groups: group 1 (negative control), group 2 (Effipro® Duo), group 3 (10% fipronil) or group 4 (12% pyriproxifen). On day 0 (D0) the products were applied topically to the cats in group 2, 3 and 4, respectively, at one spot between the shoulder blades at a dosage of 0.5 ml per cat. The cats were infested with gravid fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) on days 1, 28, 56, 70 and 84. Flea eggs were collected overnight for two consecutive nights following flea infestations and incubated for approximately 35 days. No interaction could be observed between the two active ingredients of Effipro® Duo that could have had an impact on efficacy. Persistant efficacies for the prevention of further development of flea eggs to adult fleas were markedly greater for Effipro® Duo (100% up to D85 and 94.6 % on D86) and pyriproxifen alone (90.6-100%), compared to fipronil alone (<90% from D29 to D86). The efficacy of fipronyl alone varied greatly due to its high adulticidal activity and a limited number of eggs collected. The results indicate that Effipro® Duo has a long protection period, covering three months against further development of flea eggs in cats.
