Efficacy of Effipro® Duo against ticks (Rhipicephalus turanicus) in cats
The objective of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a fipronil-pyriproxifen spot-on formulation (Effipro® Duo, Virbac, France) against ticks (Rhipicephalus turanicus) on cats. Sixteen healthy cats were studied in this parallel group design, randomised, single centre and blinded, controlled efficacy study. Cats were randomly allocated to two groups: group 1: negative control and group 2: Effipro® Duo (fipronil and pyriproxifen). On Day 0, the spot-om was administered at 0.5 ml per cat to the animals in group 2. Tick infestations were performed with 50 adult, unfed R. turanicus (South African origin) in each cat on day -2, and weekly from Day 7 to 28. Ticks were removed and counted 48 h post-treatment or infestation. The groups were compared at each time point by a one-way ANOVA with an administration effect on the untransformed tick count data. The arithmetic mean tick counts for the untreated group 1 ranged from 17.9 to 29.6, indicating a vigorous tick challenge on all assessment days. Statistically significantly (P < 0.05) fewer ticks were recorded for the treated group 2 compared to the untreated group 1 on all post-treatment assessments days. Effipro® Duo had an immediate efficacy of 91.6%, 48 h post-treatment, and a persistent efficacy >= 99.3% for up to 4 weeks post-administration (based on arithmetic means). The results indicate that Effipro® Duo has a curative effect against existing tick infestations and prevents further tick infestations up to one month after administration to cats.
